So you want to try your hand at home improvement, huh? Do you know
anything about this kind of work? Do you know about all of the different
kinds of tools and safety regulations? Do you know what entails a good
job? If these questions raise more questions than you can answer, try
looking at the tips below.
Changing a tire can be
problematic if you don't happen to be a very strong person. Loosening
the lug nuts, in particular, can take more strength than many of us
have. Use a cheater bar! A yard long piece of pipe that is just big
enough to fit over the end of your lug wrench will give you that extra
leverage to get the job done.
Keep tabs on how much you
spend on your home improvements. It is really easy to nickel and dime
yourself with small details and not realize how much you have totaled. A
simple spreadsheet or budgeting tool will help you keep track of all
this information. It will be much easier at tax time too, to be able to
get all of the deductions you deserve.
If you are suffering
the wrath of owning a small bedroom, you can create an optical illusion
making it seem larger than it is. Repainting your room in light green
or blue can create a feeling of more "space". You can also incorporate
colors such as off white or beige, but they won't feel as comfortable or
warm as the other colors would.
If you have a broken glass
window, you can try this temporary solution to prevent bugs from
entering. Use a bit of plastic cling wrap over the broken area to close
the opening. Secure it with a bit of tape to make a better seal. This is
really a temporary solution and should not be used long term.
A
common occurrence in many homes is a leaky shower head. This is caused
by a defective or damaged O-ring inside of the head. To stop the leak,
simply apply tape to the head, and twist the head off with a pipe
wrench. Find an O-ring that fits your head and place it in. Place pipe
sealer around the pipe threads and screw the head back on, with a final
tightening from the pipe wrench. Then test the head for any further
leaks.
If you have an extensive collection of collectibles
or figurines, keep what you display to a minimum. Trying to display
everything in one room or area can make your space appear cluttered.
Choose a few focal pieces, about 5 pieces at the most and arrange them
in a pleasing manner.
When hiring a contractor, you have to
keep track of everything that you do with that professional. Don't make
the assumption that this is the contractor's responsibility. Keep a
folder with all contracts and invoices relevant to the project you are
doing. That way, you can keep tabs on the progress of the job.
It
is imperative to plan beforehand for any project. If you wait until you
start, you can run into a disaster because you did not plan. When you
plan well in advance, your work will be accomplished with much greater
ease and efficiency.
